Issue Position: Affordability Crisis

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

South Brooklyn residents are facing an unprecedented affordability crisis. Albany politicians implementing sky high taxes, massive wasteful spending, burdensome regulations, and awfully misguided policies have caused many Brooklyn families to reach a breaking point where they just can't afford to live here anymore. The high cost of living not only makes families struggle to make ends meet, but also makes it nearly impossible for recent graduates to save money to invest or buy a home. We've seen it all too often, our longtime neighbors and friends are being forced out of their homes and apartments. New residents arrive here and would love to stay in South Brooklyn yet have no choice but to move because they can't possibly afford to stay here thanks to the disastrously mistaken priorities of Albany bureaucrats. A recent study found Brooklynites are paying over 24% higher rent costs than the national average while median income in Brooklyn is 10% lower than the rest of the city. Another survey suggests that Brooklyn homeowners have costs 43% higher than the national average. The current policies championed by Albany politicians have encouraged wasteful spending on pet projects while sacrificing the needs of Brooklyn residents. We don't get our fair share in money for education, transit, law enforcement, and healthcare. Meanwhile all we hear is one excuse after another why there isn't any money left. We send plenty of our tax dollars to Albany and see very little in return from it. It's time to demand accountability from the bureaucrats in Albany. Together we can reduce wasteful spending and make sure that money is allocated for worthy projects, spent wisely in places that need it.
